Healing Bruises and Cuts
When dealing with route cuts, scrapes and bruises there are a few things. Cuts and scrapes are caused by damage that breaks or tears the skin. For healing cuts and scrapes, the general process is the same:
- Rinse the wound
- Clean the affected area
- Begin treatment with antibiotic ointment
- Bandage the cut or scrape
- Allow scab to form and natural healing process to begin
Bruises, or contusions, are caused by swelling and blood vessels breaking. The ensuing movement of blood causes the trademark black, blue and sometimes yellow color associated with a bruise. Treatment for minor bruises consists of RICE:
- Rest
- Ice
- Compression
- Elevation
Over-the-counter pain medication such as acetaminophen can also help. NSAIDs such as ibuprofen are not recommended, as they interfere with the body's natural blood-clotting process.
For severe cuts and large bruises, medical attention is recommended. Medical treatment for cuts can include stitches and sutures, along with more advanced versions of RICE and pain medication for bruises. Without proper treatment, severe cuts may develop into scars.
Bruising Easily
While easy bruising does not always indicate a severe medical problem, it can be an early or severe symptom of one. Conditions indicated by bruising easily include:
- Lymphoma
- Infection (sepsis)
- Chronic inflammatory diseases
- Blood vessel inflammation
- Reaction to medication
If a bruise doesn't heal correctly, or takes an incredibly long time to heal, it may be an indicator that your body is having trouble clotting blood. If that is the case, seek treatment immediately.
